OUR STORY

Arriving in the depth of winter as 2016 came to an end, armed with a dream and a desire to live in a more rooted and resilient way, we set to work building a new life for ourselves.

Having no previous knowledge or experience in any of our current activities, we made use of the abundant inspiration and information online, read numerous books and took an online training course with Richard Perkins of Ridgedale Permaculture, who is a leader in the area of farm-scale permaculture and regenerative agriculture.

Starting off with a few chickens - the notorious ‘gateway’ farm animal, our small flock of 6 hens has now grown to more than 30 and we now breed our own laying hens and meat birds.

Keen to produce more food for ourselves and with plenty of overgrown woodland to clear, Kunekune pigs were the next arrival on the farm in 2020. Charlie Porker and his brothers were joined by Florence and her sister ‘The Machine’; and so began our adventures in pig breeding and home butchery. Since then we have been lucky enough to raise almost a hundred plucky little piglets, and most of them have gone on to find happy lives on farms, forests, vineyards and orchards across France.

With several acres of neglected pasture and pigs more keen to dig than graze, we decided that ruminants would be the next addition. 2021 saw the introduction of our beautiful Normande cows, Celeste and Luna. Normandes have excellent quality, creamy milk, mostly notably used to make camembert, and are also renowned for their superior, highly marbled beef. These, wonderful, gentle creatures convert the suns’ energy via the grass they eat into milk and meat, laying down fertiliser as they go, building and enriching the soil.
